Porcelain veneer

Porcelain veneers are a long-lasting way to transform your smile. Porcelain mimics the characteristics–translucence, color, and gloss–of natural teeth. Your teeth will have natural-looking beauty that helps you smile with confidence.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are strong, wafer-thin porcelain shells customized to fit over the fronts of your teeth. They are bonded on to give you a long-lasting smile makeover.

When Are Porcelain Veneers Used?

Cosmetic dentists use porcelain veneers to correct imperfections in your teeth and enhance your smile. Veneers can correct a variety of flaws, including:

  • Abnormal tooth shape or size
  • Chips
  • Cracks
  • Discoloration and stains
  • Gaps
  • Misalignment
  • Unevenness

How Do Veneers Compare with Crowns and Composite Bonding?

Veneers

  • Use – Create smile makeovers and conceal imperfections in teeth, but not for severe damage to teeth
  • Preparation – Requires no or very minimal preparation to the fronts of your teeth
  • Durability – Stain resistant and can last five to 20 years or longer

Crowns

  • Use – Protect a tooth that is severely damaged, restore dental implants, make a dental bridge
  • Preparation – Tooth preparation is aggressive around all sides of each affected tooth
  • Durability – Stain resistant and can last five to 20 years or longer

Composite Bonding

  • Use – Conceal small chips, discoloration, or gaps in a few teeth
  • Preparation – Requires light etching of your tooth enamel
  • Durability – Is not stain resistant and can last about five years with good home care

Are You a Candidate for Veneers?

Before treatment begins, we will determine if you are a candidate for porcelain veneers. You’re probably a candidate if the following is true:

  • Your teeth and gums are healthy
  • You have enough tooth enamel for bonding the veneers
  • Your bite is correctly aligned

What Is the Porcelain Veneers Process?

We start the porcelain veneers process by listening as you describe your ideal smile. We take the following steps:

  • Smile ideas – We will review any sample photos that you bring of smiles that you like. And we will show you our before-and-after patient photos.
  • Pictures of your smile – We will take pictures of your face and smile to design a natural-looking smile makeover.
  • Preparation – Depending on the type of veneers and your smile goals, we may remove a fraction of a millimeter of tooth enamel to prepare your teeth for porcelain veneers.
  • Impression – We will take impressions of your teeth to make temporary veneers.
  • Temporary veneers – Our ceramist will make temporary (provisional) veneers for you to try on and wear. The provisional veneers will look and feel like your permanent ones. Ask for any changes you want to the temporary veneers. And when you love how they look and feel, we will take an impression of your provisional veneers so that our master ceramist can duplicate them in porcelain.
  • Crafting your veneers – A master ceramist will use your photos and our instructions to custom craft your veneers.
  • Porcelain veneers try-in – When your porcelain veneers are ready, we will attach them to your teeth with a try-in paste. You will examine how they look and feel.
  • Bonding – If you love your porcelain veneers, we will bond them on. Otherwise, we will send them back to the lab for changes or to be remade. This is our beautiful smile guarantee—your new smile won’t be bonded until you love how it looks.

Our process and your input help us to guarantee that you will love your new smile.

How Long Do Porcelain Veneers Last?

We offer a five-year warranty on porcelain veneers that we place. However, we expect them to last much longer than that. Glazed porcelain is harder and more stain resistant than you natural teeth. The success of your veneers is significantly affected by your cosmetic dentist’s artistic talent and skill with tooth preparation and bonding techniques. And you must take good care of them.

How to Care for Your Veneers

Care for your porcelain veneers as you would your natural teeth.

  • Floss between your teeth.
  • Use non-abrasive toothpaste.
  • Let us know if you clench your grind your teeth, and we can provide a custom mouthguard to wear and night.
  • Only schedule your examinations and cleanings with a dentist and hygienist who understand how to care for veneers and avoid damaging them.
